Statement on the Special Rapporteur on Health's Visit to Canada

Action Canada in collaboration with the Sexual Rights Initiative delivered a statement at the 41st Human Rights Council on the Special Rapporteur on Health’s visit to Canada.

During his visit to Canada, we made sure the Special Rapporteur was meeting with partners across the country to ensure sexual and reproductive health and rights issues were considered as priority health issues. Because of our leadership, the Special Rapporteur included strong recommendations on sexual and reproductive health and rights in his report to Canada.

The recommendations:

1. Have a rights-based criteria for federal funding under the Canada Health Transfer
2. Ensure that all girls and women in Canada, including migrants and Indigenous women, have access to sexual and reproductive health information and services, including safe abortion, everywhere in Canada
3. Encourage the Government of Ontario to reverse its retrogressive measures on comprehensive sexuality education.
