Cinémas Guzzo has secured the Quebec rights to a controversial new film that some say presents a biased anti-abortion viewpoint. Unplanned will be shown on five Montreal screens beginning July 12 or 19, according to chain owner Vincent Guzzo.
The American fiction film is based on the life experience of Abby Johnson, a former Planned Parenthood clinic director in Texas who goes on to become stridently anti-abortion.
Described on the film’s website as “an eye-opening look inside the abortion industry from a woman who was once its most passionate advocate” and “an inspiring true story,” the film has drawn criticism from pro-abortion groups for stretching the truth.
“It’s deplorable,” said Marianne Labrecque, coordinator of the Fédération du Québec pour le planning des naissances (FQPN), of the decision to show the film here.
Labrecque watched the movie on Wednesday afternoon and was disturbed by the manner in which the content was presented.
