Feminist Organizations Launch Demand Better Campaign: The Time to Push Candidates for a more Equitable Economy Is Now.

OTTAWA, [7 April 2025] – This election, 50+ leading feminist organizations have launched Demand Better, a national non-partisan campaign calling on Canadians to push politicians to prioritize the needs of everyday people. As economic uncertainty, rising costs, and threats to our sovereignty intensify, Demand Better urges voters to hold politicians accountable for investing in policies that secure our jobs, support families, and build a more equitable Canada.

“As Canada is threatened with a destabilizing trade war, we need our leaders to protect and strengthen the Canadian economy by investing in its bedrock, like public healthcare and ensuring access to affordable housing and child care,” says Debbie Owusu-Akyeeah, Co-Director of Policy and Advocacy at Action Canada for Sexual Health and Rights. “We don’t have to choose between the economy and programs that support all Canadians—they are one and the same.”

Social programs inject billions into the economy, create millions of jobs and build the resilience Canada needs in uncertain times. Gender equality cannot be an afterthought: it is the backbone of a strong economy.  A strong economy and resilient democracy are not at odds with our commitment to social progress – they only reinforce one another.  And it’s up to all of us to hold our leaders accountable when fighting for a stronger Canada for everyone.

“Progressive policies are directly tied to our economic stability. The feminist movement has always pushed forward, creating lasting change — and we’re not stopping now,” says Emilie Coyle, Executive Director of the Canadian Association of Elizabeth Fry Societies. “Together we can make life richer for all of us.”

As we head into the federal election, Demand Better reminds voters that their voices and choices matter. By demanding policies that protect human rights, strengthen public services, and create a more equitable society, Canadians can shape a future where everyone has a real chance to thrive. This is the kind of Canada worth fighting for.

It’s time to demand better. Sign the pledge and join the movement at demandbettertoday.ca
